Parisians and the Issues

Strangely enough, this election is not really about who will make the best mayor of Paris. According to survey results published in the 9 February issue of Liberation, 54% of Parisians surveyed are satisfied with Jean Tiberi's performance as mayor since 1995.

But high approval ratings, mean nothing. Only 29% of Parisians think Tiberi should be relected, versus 64% who say he shouldn't. The mainstream candidate of the right, Philippe Séguin, doesn't fare much better, only 33% of respondents seemed to think that he would make a good mayor.

Now you can listen to ParisTempo's new musical selections online right here...

In fact, 56% of those surveyed believe the Left will win the captial this March. The socialist candidate Bertrand Delanoë, has 53% of respondents believing he would make a good mayor. Even 29% of those who consider themselves to be supporters of the Right agreed.

Delanoë's success comes in part from the role that scandal will play in the upcoming election. According to the survey, 61% of Parisians say the scandals have some impact on their voting intentions -- and the scandals hurt the Right. Another factor helping the Socialist candidate is that a whopping 84% of Parisians want a mayor who will focus exclusively on Paris without any national responsibility -- and that has been the cornerstone of his electoral campaign from the outset.
