Dossier: The Danone Boycott
Why are French shoppers boycotting Danone and how has it effected government policy toward business? Understanding the roots of the Danone Controversy... Why so many shoppers support the boycott... How government policy toward buisness is changing...

Shoppers Support Danone Workers

Overall there has been an outpouring of support for the Danone workers.

People support the boycott because they see it as a tool of solidarity between consumers and workers against stockholders. The boycott hurts the company's image and therefore its stockprice. Many see this as the only way they can reach the stockholders and make "big business" listen.

Now you can listen to ParisTempo's new musical selections online right here...

Increased public discussion has boosted the boycott's popularity to the point where some cashiers politely inform patrons that a certain branded product is actually Danone. And the shopper often leaves the item behind.

However, overall levels of consumer compliance with the boycott vary.

Many of those following the boycott have difficulty determining which products -- branded under various names -- are actually made by Danone. Some shoppers even carry a list.

Others who support the workers' cause in principle are not ready to change their habits. These consumers confess to not strictly following the boycott. Often they make the effort to buy a competitive product when it is easily available, but if they do not see an alternative on the supermarket shelf, they still buy Danone.

Almost all consumers doubt that the boycott will really make Danone change its policy. Even those who fully support the boycott don't see how a consumer boycott will make Danone executives change a policy dictated by the interests of stockholders. Still, they follow the boycott to demonstrate their support for the workers.

Some consumers say they don't see the point. They say that in the end the boycott will destroy Danone just to see it replaced by Nestle.
