Something Different around Oberkampf...

Just walking around the ever-changing Oberkampf "scene" can be fun. Besides the plethora of cool cafés and bistros, there are lots of other things to do here (and nearby).

Of course, shopping is always fun, but why not do something different?

Now you can listen to ParisTempo's new musical selections online right here...

Here's a few of our proposals...

Hammam d'Oberkampf
160 rue d'Oberkampf,
Tel. : 01.43.57.67.71

Check out this Hammam (turkish bath) which features massage and sauna for both men and women, and spend the afternoon relaxing and rejuvenating the body and spirit.

Cava Cava
9, rue Moret,
Tel. : 01.43.55.18.84

Take a Salsa class at Cava Cava -- for 60F you can learn from the professionals. No need to have prior experience, and even a beginner can have fun (classes daily). Come back on Tuesdays to show off your dancing skills at the weekly "soirée caliente."

Le Timbaud
99, rue Jean Pierre Timbaud 11ème
Tel : 01.49.23.08.96.

or

L'Emir
3-5 place Chevalier 20ème
Tel : 01.46.36.94.38

Smoke the Nargile (waterpipe) in one of these two middle-eastern-influenced cafés.

Le Timbaud maintains a simple and authentic ambience where you can smoke to the accompaniment of middle eastern and african music. The air sometimes thick with the sweet smoke, its easy to lose track of time while losing yourself in your own thoughts, or discussing the finer points of philosophy with your oldest friend.

L'Emir seems a bit more austere at first -- small and simple across from the Church of Saint Ambroise -- but it is a superb setting to smoke and drink a sweet tea "à la menthe".

Outdoor Markets

For those a bit less "adventurous" the outdoor markets around Oberkampf on Tuesdays and Fridays offer some interesting opportunities. The one to the north (boulevard de Belleville, métro Ménilmontant) isn't too expensive, and is a good place to go for fruits. The one on Richard Lenoir (métro Parmentier) is a bit more "up market."

And don't forget to check out these fun cafés...
