The weather is finally getting better. Blue skies replacing grey. A change of pace and a change of place is in order. If you're "in the neighborhood" check out one of these friendly places... Or check out something slightly different...

Now you can listen to ParisTempo's new musical selections online right here...

La Patache

Café-Bar 10ème
Métro : Jacques Bonsergent ou République.
60, rue de Lancry
tel: 01.42.08.14.35
Daily 18 h - 2 h.

This is one of those great neighborhood hangout places near the Canal with beers at 10F, and live performances on weekends. Small and friendly, even for those from outside the quartier.

Café Charbon

Café-Restaurant 11ème
109, rue Oberkampf
tel : 01 43 57 55 13
Métro: Saint-Maur or Parmentier
Daily: 9h00 - 2h00

A favorite place to chill out on Oberkampf (and don't forget to try these other Paris Tempo picks on Oberkampf).

Whether its for a quick drink or to assuage the appetite with one of the large and original salades, this is the place to choose for the décor, ambience and even the friendly banter.

It was once a music hall where it is said both Mistinguett and Maurice Chevallier made their debuts. In the intervening years it has had many other faces, but as the Charbon, it has been returned to a bit of its earlier ambience. Check out the utlra high ceiling, and feel yourself back in a popular neighborhood café circa the 1920s. The mirrors and murals of the old dancehall have been restored to their original state. And don't forget to try the "Absente", listed on the posters at 15F (which is actually a kind of "absinthe lite" and quite legal).

The Charbon was one of the first bars to establish itself on the rue Oberkampf scene. And somehow, they have manged to maintain the spirit of a small neighborhood bar -- a comfortable atmosphere lacking in some of the more "trend-concious" places that have grown up around it.

The Charbon has a fun and original staff, creative cuisine, a cool atmosphere, and accepts everyone with an equally warm welcome. Stop in alone for the morning coffee, or later in the evening with friends for a reasonably priced drink (demi 15 - 17F) as you make your way from pub to club in this popular neighborhood.

Le Chào-Bà

Bar-Restaurant 18ème
Métro: Pigalle
22, boulevard de Clichy
tel : 01 46 06 72 90
Mon.-Wed, 8h30 - 2h, Thurs. until 4h, Fri. and Sat. 9h - 5h

Some might say it is the décor that makes Chào-Bà so unique, but that's not all: excellent asian food and a DJ mixing the ambient music make this a place worth checking out. Situated in the middle of this neighborhood that doesn't stop, it's the ideal place to enjoy an aperitif on the ground floor before heading upstairs to eat in the calmer ambience of the restaurant.

And its open until 5am on weekends!! But get there early if you want to make the most of the reasonably priced drinks (prices go up later in the evening), and lose yourself in the nouveau-retro vietnamese colonial ambience.

Les 7 Lézards

Café-Restaurant 4ème
10, rue des Rosiers
tel. 01 48 87 08 97
Métro : Saint-Paul.
Wed.-Sun.: 11 h - 2 h, Mon. and Tue.: 18 h - 2 h.

Great jazz music in the basement, and great food at a reasonable price (its actually possible to have a delicious, if simple, meal for under 100F).
